United Nations Day

October 24, 2019
Today, on United Nations Day, we are reminded of what can be achieved when the world works together.  We reflect on major global challenges like inequality, violent extremism, and political dictatorships.
In an unpredictable world, it is important that we join all peoples to meet oppression and evil, and build a better future for our children.
For over 70 years, the United Nations has brought the international community together to discuss difficult issues that transcend national borders.  People from around the world support UN programs and agencies that are intended to help the world’s most vulnerable.
Despite the failures of the UN, Canada as a founding member will continue to engage other countries to strive for global peace and security.  Canada has a longstanding commitment to UN military peacekeeping.
As Canada works within the UN to meet the challenges of the 21st century, we remain committed to achieving sustainable development goals at home and abroad, to help make the world more just, prosperous, safe.
Canada has submitted its candidacy to serve on the UN Security Council for 2021-22.  We are committed to playing a constructive role at the United Nations.  As we approach the United Nations’ 75th anniversary next year, we remind about what the UN has accomplished, and what it still needs to do.
