Conservative
It
is a great time to be a Conservative in Canada, and to feel that one is on the
right side of history. We recognize that
we have always lived in an unstable world; the dark side has always been there. Yet the human story is one of repeated
victories over adversity, sometimes at great cost. Every generation is called to defend the good
within the unique challenges of their time.
At
the core of the Conservative ethic is a belief in a life balance between personal
responsibility and compassionate social policy, which can empower the less
fortunate by promoting self-reliance and equality of opportunity.
Rights
are balanced with responsible obligations.
For our nation, the goal is to build a national coalition of shared beliefs
that accommodates regional, cultural, and socio-economic diversity, grounded in
a unity of positive values. Canada is greater
than the sum of its strong parts.
Modern
political Conservativism operates in a manner that is accountable and
responsive to its members, in truth and fidelity.
In
our Canadian Westminster model of governance, Conservatives believe in appropriate
loyalty to our Sovereign, and in a united Canada governed by our Constitution,
which reflects the supremacy of democratic parliamentary institutions and the
rule of reasonable law.
Conservatives
believe in the value and dignity of all human life and equality. Individual freedoms include freedom of
speech, worship, assembly, and association.
Conservatives are mindful of the Canadian Charter of Rights and
Freedoms.
Conservatives
defend our constitutional monarchy, the institutions of Parliament, and the
democratic process, fostering pride and trust in Canada's enduring institutions
and the strength of our federal system.
Some
additional beliefs of Conservatism that are guarantors of personal and national
prosperity are:
-the
freedom of individual Canadians to pursue their enlightened and legitimate
self-interest within a free competitive economy;
-the
freedom of individual Canadians to enjoy the fruits of their labour to the
greatest possible extent;
-the
value of the family as central to a prosperous society
-the
right to own property.
-a
belief that a responsible government must be fiscally prudent and should be
limited to those responsibilities which cannot be discharged reasonably by the
individual or others.
-a
belief that it is the responsibility of individuals to provide for themselves,
their families and their dependents, while recognizing that government must
respond to those who require assistance and compassion.
-a
belief that the purpose of Canada as a nation state, guided by reflective and
prudent leadership, is to create a climate wherein individual initiative is
rewarded, excellence is pursued, security and privacy of the individual are
provided, and prosperity is pursued in a free, competitive, open market
economy.
-a
belief that Canada should continue its strong heritage of national defence,
supporting a well-armed military, honouring those who serve, and promoting our
history and traditions.
-a
belief that the quality of the environment is a vital part of our heritage to
be protected by each generation for the next.
-a
belief that Canada must accept its obligations among the nations of the world.
-a
belief that Canadian Jurisdiction extends beyond the coastline to include the
internationally recognized regions of the Territorial Sea, Exclusive Economic
Zone (EEZ) and Continental Shelf.
-a
belief that good and responsible government is attentive to the people it
represents and consists of members who at all times ethically conduct
themselves and display integrity, honesty and concern for the best interest of
all.
-a
belief that all Canadians should have reasonable access to quality healthcare
regardless of their ability to pay.
-a
belief that the greatest potential for achieving social and economic objectives
is under a global trading regime that is free and fair.
Canadian
Conservatism is the responsible choice for personal fulfillment, and the best
hope for our successive generations.
